What is Open Workshop?

SBAP is a South St. Louis Pottery Studio. 

At Open Workshop, instruction is available when you want or need to learn, and we can allow you to grow at your own pace whether your goal is a specific technique, piece or just learning about clay and having a good time. Bring your mom, kids, friends, neighbors, co-workers. Read more to find out which type of pass is the best fit your you!

Kids love making their own Mug, Cup or Bowl! Mugs can be made in endless shapes, themes and ideas! Make a self portrait mug, favorite animal or pet, or maybe trinket dish....

"MaKe-A-Mug, Cup or Bowl" 

The first pottery class for new students is the make a mug, cup or bowl project, and the 2nd project involves a few more steps. Kids and adults who have repetitive 5 hour passes will continue to advance in their hand-building skills.

"MaKe-A-Mug, Cup or Bowl" 

Students can expect to MaKe 2 Two projects on a 5 hour pass. The first project for new students is "MaKe-A-Mug, Cup or Bowl" utilizing pinch, coil and sculptural techniques. The 2nd project usually involves a few more steps....

12 Hour Passes

Kids and Adults can learn to take their artistic processes of MaKing to the next level with a 12 or 28 hour pass. With a 12 or 28 hour pass students can start to work with slabs, and design their own projects with instructor guidance.  Once kids 9-12 years have completed 5 hours of hand-building they can choose to learn about Wheel Throwing.

12 Hour Pass 13-Adult

Teens and Adults with a 12 or 28 hour pass can learn all about Wheel Throwing or Hand-building. Beginners and all levels welcome. Use your pass in 1, 2, and 3 hour increments. Instructors are working with students the whole time.

How to use your pass

Use your pass in 1, 2, and 3 hours, as well as on the 1/2 hour.  Drop-in or reserve your time in advance. Students with reservations are seated first. Groups of 6 or more should call or email ahead to pre-pay and reserve space.

GLAZE, PAINT, FIRE

Come back and glaze, paint, or stain your own pottery. Just make sure to wait 2 weeks from Saturday before coming in to finish.  Instructors can also dip your pottery for you in our artisanal studio-made glazes. Pottery made here is fired to cone 6, which means it is food safe stoneware as well as dishwasher and microwave safe.

Pottery Pick-Up

Pottery Pick-Up is usually 3 or 4 weeks as pottery needs time to dry and then we do the 1st fire (bisque fire), and then 2 fire (glaze). To be sure your pottery is ready for pick-up click here before making a special trip. ​​(When picking up yours or your friends pottery it is a good to know the class date and or have a picture)

Students with a 12 or 28 hour pass who want to learn to Throw on the Potters Wheel should attend a 1 hour demonstration to learn the basic steps of wheel throwing and our studio! All students must have a pass to attend a hands-on wheel demonstration

Surface Decoration Demos

Learn about scraffito, mischima, image transfers, or painterly techniques. We are always doing new and different techniques with surface design at Open Workshop. Surface decoration demonstration schedule will be posted soon!

All students will need a pass ​to attend Open Workshop. Parents also need a pass to attend with their child.  Left-over hours can transfer to next season, but expire if not used within two years from date of purchase. Students with 5, 12, & 28 hour passes will receive a members only login to view studio notes and hours.
